American Red Cross Lifeguarding with Waterfront Course - BL 

Description: The Waterfront Lifeguard certification course incorporates both the Lifeguarding course with the Waterfront skills module. The purpose of the Waterfront skills module is to teach lifeguards the skills and knowledge needed to prevent and respond to emergencies in non-surf, open-water areas found at public parks, resorts, summer camps and campgrounds. This course incorporates a blended learning format with online training sessions, classroom skills and water rescue activities. Students who successfully complete this course will earn a certificate for Lifeguarding with Waterfront/First Aid/CPR/AED which is valid for 2 years. 
Course Overview: 
  • Be at least 15 years of age.
  • Online material takes approximately 7 hours to complete
  • In person training is scheduled for 26 hours

Prerequisites: Lifeguard prerequisite skills are designed to ensure candidates meet the physical fitness and swimming requirements necessary to successfully complete and continue the course
PREREQUISITE 1: Complete a swim-tread-swim sequence without stopping to rest
  • Jump into the water and totally submerge, resurface then swim 350 yards (14 laps) using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. (Swimming on the back or side is not permitted. Swim goggles are allowed).
  • Maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs.
  • Swim 200 yards (8 laps) using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. 
PREREQUISITE 2: Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds
  • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. (The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed).
  • Submerge to a depth of 7-10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object. 
  • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping the face out at or near the surface.
PREREQUISITE 3: Complete an underwater swim
  • Swim 5 yards, submerge and retrieve three dive rings placed 5 yards apart in 4-7 feet of water
  • Resurface and continue to swim another 5 yards

General schedule: Most courses are taught using the intensive format over 2 OR 4 days. 
  • Day 1 – Pre-course skills test, entries, approaches, victim recognition, assisting distressed swimmers, rescuing an active drowning victim, rescuing a passive drowning victim
  • Day 2 – Performing a primary assessment and treating breathing emergencies, treating cardiac emergencies,  and first aid
  • Day 3 – Rescuing a spinal victim, Strategies for handling situations that differ from practice, lifeguard written exam and practical skills testing
  • Day 4 – Waterfront Module
  • **Please note that is a general outline, sessions will be adapted based on course schedule**

Payment is due before in person classes begin.  If participant fails any part of Lifeguarding with Waterfront or Waterfront Recertification Course (swim tests, CPR/First Aid/AED written tests and water skills or missing a scheduled class) it will result in loss of payment and you will have to retake the entire course and pay the training fee again.

FINAL FEES WILL BE COLLECTED ON THE FIRST DAY OF IN PERSON TRAINING.

Upon successful completion, all certifications will be e-mailed to participants.
